At Absafe, we sometimes take our safety education sessions on tour.
St Machar Academy asked that we devise a special CSI-themed workshop for its entire first year group, that would act as a team building and problem solving exercise for its newest and youngest pupils and help keep them safe following extensive remodelling of the surrounding road networks.
We asked 150 S1 students to become amateur detectives and uncover the series of events in a road crash scenario. Each class was divided into smaller groups, where they worked out speed calculations, reviewed the physical and photographic evidence and interviewed witnesses.
The objectives of the day were to encourage teamwork and problem solving, decision making and to gain self-confidence in risk assessment as well as educating the students in the essentials of road safety.
The Absafe team acted as witnesses, and after some intense questioning, the junior sleuths worked out what happened and who was at fault for the crash.
“St Machar Academy has had the pleasure of hosting Absafe twice in the last few months. Absafe’s road safety messages are presented in an innovative and interesting way and what they do really holds the audience’s attention. The feedback session at the end of the presentation clearly showed that the message had been delivered. All Absafe staff interacted well with our S1s and there was a positive and purposeful atmosphere in our school hall when the presentations were taking place. I would unreservedly recommend schools to book Absafe to speak to their pupils about road safety.” Ali MacGregor, Depute Head, St Machar Academy
