Natasha Downs

“Volunteering with Absafe is very enjoyable and fulfilling. We work with small group of children, in an informal environment, which help to build confidence, as well as develop presentation skills. The lessons are very interactive and engaging. The benefits of teaching health and safety skills to children are life changing, I am planning to become a teacher and feel that this supportive and friendly organisation is helping me gain valuable experience.”

Rhianin Mackie Testemonie About Volunteering with Absafe

What’s the best thing about volunteering with Absafe?
I really enjoy the working environment at Absafe, as all staff and volunteers are cheery and so welcoming. I also love that we are helping youngsters to gain knowledge and awareness of how to keep safe both inside and outside the home, all whilst having a fun day at Absafe. That's the most rewarding part for me.

What have you learned since you began volunteering?
I've learned about the importance of working as a team but also working individually at the same time to deliver the high standard of teaching continually. I've also learned about adapting teaching to different ages and keeping it light hearted and fun but still highlighting the importance of our message.

Would you recommend volunteering to a friend?
I would absolutely recommend volunteering. It’s a great experience for anyone maybe looking to progress into teaching or working with children, or event management.

What kind of person do you think you need to be to be a volunteer?
You should be flexible and adaptable, positive and keen to learn.

What advice would you give to any new volunteers?
Don't be nervous. This opportunity is a huge one and the amount of gratitude you receive from Absafe makes the experience even more worthwhile because you know you are helping to make a difference.
